7 Steps to ManagementThe 7 Steps to Management contains an extremely flexible set of 7 modules covering key management skills for all of the essential management skills areas.
As with all our programmes, these modules are highly participative and engaging for those who attend. The programme facilitator will include necessary theory to ensure a good understanding, but the focus is on active learning and practicing the skills so that delegates can immediately use these when they get back to work.
Each module is independent, enabling you to buy just the one you want, individual relevant modules over a period of time, or purchase the complete programme of 7 modules. The content of each module can be amended to include organisation specific processes and procedures. The duration of each module is either 1 or 2 days, depending on the precise content required.
Whichever module or combination of modules you select they will be facilitated by one of our highly experienced facilitators, to our usual high standard. You can be sure of getting thorough coverage of the subject and the assurance of an immediate, positive impact on your organisation.
The 7 modules are shown in the model above. To view brief information about each module, hover your mouse over the relevant section. To view detailed information, click on the relevant section.
This 1 day course is aimed at new and aspiring managers in the social housing sector and focuses on what managers actually do and their contribution to the organisation.
The activities are designed to be entertaining, but have serious undertones, which deliberately take delegates out of their comfort zone and compel them to experience an ever changing and evolving environment. Whilst applying standard management processes, delegates are led into managing an emergent string of capability issues as well as navigating their way through changing goals and objectives. Achievement of the outcomes is dependent on them identifying and overcoming barriers and combining their efforts towards the common goal.
The review process that runs in parallel with the activities provides facilitated checkpoints to ensure that delegates capture all significant learning points and establish the relevance these have to their management role in the future.

Getting the best performance from everyone in the team is crucial if your organisation is to deliver the best possible service for tenants and other stakeholders. This 1 day course focuses on staff performance and how to get the very best from people. The starting point is around understanding why we need to manage performance, the value of doing so, and the consequences of failing to do so.
The course explores why performance varies, what affects it, and what to do in response to both poor and high performers. The course moves on to introduce performance coaching; an invaluable tool for managing the, often ignored, high performers.
Practical exercises covering performance management reviews and managing under and over-performers complete the programme and help delegates to develop skills and strategies for dealing with most common performance issues.
This is a module of the 7 Steps to Management Programme.

Learn the processes involved and how these complement the aims of achieving
maximum performance

Managing the way we communicate, how we influence others and the way in which they communicate with us, is at the centre of the competences of an effective manager within the social housing environment.
This module leads delegates to a deeper understanding of communication and the context in which the skills are applied when in relating with colleagues and tenants; managing conflict, giving and receiving feedback and organising and participating in meetings.
An understanding of what gets in the way of good, clear communication is a powerful start as participants come to realise that so much is dependent on deeply embedded attitudes, thinking and behavioural patterns. Participants are immersed in exploring and applying practical skills and techniques that they can immediately use in their personal and working lives.
This is a module of the 7 Steps to Management Programme.
Objectives:
Appreciate the value of giving and receiving feedback
Develop a process to manage feedback effectively
Understand and apply assertiveness techniques
Explore and develop active listening and a range of questioning skills

This 1 day programme brings to life the understanding of how to manage and grow a team and is perfect for anyone in the social housing sector who manages a team of staff towards shared goals.
We often refer to teams without any real consideration of whether we are talking of a team or a group of people who happen to work together.
This programme starts by exploring what a team is and what makes it different to any other group, then moves on to how a team can be created and developed.
Delegates will explore how, based on Belbin’s theories, people tend to adopt different roles when they work within a team, and how this impacts on team performance. Practical sessions throughout ensure that delegates can apply everything they are learning to their teams back at work.
This is a module of the 7 Steps to Management Programme.
Objectives:
Understand the importance of team-working in achieving objectives
Know the natural attributes that members can bring to the team
Be aware of your own strengths when working with a team
Reflect on your team back at work and appreciate its strengths and weaknesses
Develop a plan to gain maximum value from your work-team’s strengths
Develop strategies to manage things at which the team is less good
