Sexual Orientation in Equality & Diversity

The programme is suitable for everyone in your workplace. It can be customised to take into account different sectors and roles of personnel to ensure the course is completely relevant to the roles and responsibilities of all participants. It runs as a full day or can be limited to a half-day introductory programme.

This programme is designed to go beyond helping organisations ensure that they comply with the legislation and that they are doing at least the bare minimum required by law. The aim of this course is to explore the issues surrounding homophobia and homophobic behaviour within the workplace and discover ways in which to deal with them. Understanding what can be done and the benefits to individuals and the organisation is a critical output of this programme.

This involving programme involves challenging group work; it employs colourful and engaging visuals and provides relevant reference notes. It supports you to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people do not experience discrimination and prejudice as employees or customers.

The course raises awareness of the sorts of issues faced LGBT people and how they can be addressed. It looks at staff and management attitudes, departmental policies and legislation protecting LGBT people at work.

Participants are involved in the workshop-style activities that allow them to:

  • Become more fully aware of LGBT issues at work and their implications
  • Understand current and planned legal obligations and how to comply with them
  • Become equipped with the tools to feel confident about challenging homophobic discrimination
  • Reflect and explore best practice approaches to developing a supportive and inclusive environment in your organisation
  • Consider changes that will ensure that the organisation becomes and goes beyond being fully legally compliant to support its future success
  • Improved employee-employee and management-employee relations
  • Greater awareness of the issues and knowing how to behave
  • Enables everyone to understand how they contribute towards their personal and the organisation’s obligations
  • Minimises the possibilities of discrimination and reduces risk of legal challenges
  • Supports the recruitment and retention of the best people for the job
  • Helps the organisation become recognised as a good place to work

This is designed as a one-day workshop but can be extended to give more depth or abridged to a half-day by reducing content and time spent on group and practical work.
