Age Equality And Diversity
The UK has an ageing population. By the middle of the 21st century, there will only be 2.5 people of working age to each pensioner, which will put tremendous pressure on funding pension payments.
Organisations are required by law not to discriminate in employment on the grounds of age, which is to be extended in the new Single Equality Bill due in 2010.
This workshop is customised for each client and aims to raise awareness of why there is age discrimination, what steps must be taken to erase it and the benefits that derive from doing so.

This is an engaging and interesting workshop that involves everyone from the outset. It is set in the context of the broader Equality and Diversity agenda but with a clear focus on age equality. Participants are involved in the workshop-style activities that allow them to:
- Build an understanding of equality and diversity – and why they are both important and inter-related
- Develop an appreciation of different attitudes towards ageism and age diversity
- Recognise the business benefits that are realised from employing an age diverse workforce
- Understand and explore age discrimination and practice ways to identify and deal with it effectively
- Review relevant legislation and the planned Single Equality Bill; what impact it has within the workplace
- Develop a plan of action to implement the learning
- Improved employee and management relations
- Greater appreciation, awareness and respect between age groups
- Enables everyone to understand how they contribute towards organisation’s obligations in respect of age discrimination and highlights the consequences of not doing so
- Minimises the possibilities of discrimination and reduces risk of legal challenges
- Identifies where discriminatory practices do, or could, exist and actions that will be taken to eliminate them
- Helps make the organisation a better place in which to work
This is designed as a one-day workshop but can be extended to give more depth or abridged to a half-day by reducing content and time spent on group and practical work.
The morning session is an interactive session that provides information on age equality legislation and its impact. It also provides guidance on general good practice, together with sources of help and guidance.
The afternoon session enables participants to focus on current policies and practices within your organisation, whilst exploring age diversity as it applies to individual areas of operation.
Morning Session
- Introduction, overview and background to age equality and diversity
- Age Diversity - what does it mean in practice?
- The benefits of encouraging equality and diversity
- * Relevant Legislation
- Syndicate session using case studies relevant to your organisation. ‘You are the judge’ – has discrimination occurred?
- What would make you or I feel discriminated against? This interactive session asks participants to look at some common misunderstandings around age and consider how they would respond
- Challenging discrimination – an interactive session with input and practice.
When and how to challenge and manage age discrimination - How to challenge in a sensitive, positive and constructive manner - what to say and how to say it. Delegates learn a well-proven and easy to use technique that can be used in all types of situation where issues have to be dealt with sensitivity and care. Non-threatening practice scenarios are used to allow participants to use and rehearse the skill so that they are comfortable and confident in applying it in work-related situations
* Note: If an in-depth focus on legislation is required it will lengthen the duration of the course
Afternoon Session
- Age Positive Practices – case study syndicate work
- We work in partnership with you to design case studies that reflect situations that are parallel to those that currently exist in your organisation. These are used to allow participants then apply their own policies and guidelines to see if the most effective results materialise. This allows each participant to apply the learning from the morning and to open up awareness of their own limitations and those that may exist in their area of responsibility
- An interactive session is tailored specifically to your organisation and enables participants immediately to recognise how and where age diversity directly impacts in some or all of the following areas:
- Recruitment
- Selection
- Training
- Promotion
- Flexible working
- Pay and Benefits
- Retention
- Redundancy
- Retirement
- Action planning. Based on the action so far delegates collect all the pitfalls and issues that they believe exist in the organisation and create a plan to address them. This is facilitated in a way that ownership is accepted so that the plan can be actioned immediately after the workshop
