Continual Professional Development is Key for 2010

A new year brings many resolutions, whether they surround work or personal areas, yet how many are actually kept passed the end of January? To help increase the chances of success, we need to remember Boot’s renowned January advert advice; limit the number of resolutions, as it is much easier to focus and be successful on one area at a time, than spreading ourselves too thinly.

The main theme for most resolutions is improvement e.g. increase fitness, lose weight or gain a promotion and pay rise, and so it is easy to see why continual professional development is a key area for many managers at the beginning of 2010.

During December 2009, the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) conducted a Future Forecast survey, asking 1,337 managers what their focus for 2010 will be; unsurprisingly the top answer was pledging support to their team’s development (45%).

Righttrack Consultancy has positively endorsed and supported continual professional development since it was established in 1988, over 21 years ago. Believing that learning is a continual process and one that needs time and dedication to really maximise the benefits is why Righttrack actively promotes working partnerships and continual development.

Righttrack believes the main reason for managers choosing to focus on supporting team development over other activities is because they realise that in order to keep their best employees when the job market picks up, which it inevitably will, they need to show commitment, confidence and, more importantly, credibility as an employer.

Whilst official development is vital, Righttrack believes that complementing official learning through additional reading and interaction with e-newsletters, industry tips, white papers etc helps keep the learning process continually moving.

Gemma Middleton, Righttrack’s Marketing Manager says, “Skills development is a powerful people management tool and at Righttrack we believe in providing an all-round, supportive learning environment.

Righttrack has been around a long time and over the years our topic specialists have accrued hundreds of tips and insights that are simple yet incredibly effective. We decided that we should maximise these resources and make them available to all.

This new initiative is called Righttrack Insights and consists of two monthly emails covering sales, management and leadership learning messages. The Insights feature handy tips, topic news, answers to questions, etc. We are keen for the content to be driven by the readers, asking questions and requesting topics; we want to create interaction as we feel this will strengthen people’s belief and dedication to learning and development.

We believe that learning and development will play a key role in the recovery of the UK economy and those that encourage all types of skill development from the off will be the ones who will reap the benefits.”
