The Righttrack to Leadership Excellence

Fostering the development of leaders and leadership excellence is the subject of many a contested debate – and with an ever increasing focus on leadership as the driving force of organisations in both the private and public sector, this is a debate that is set to stay.

So what exactly is the best way to develop the leadership potential within an organisation? Some organisations focus on the purely qualifications based route, which provides solid, quality assured learning, whilst others prefer the professional in-company training route where learning and development programmes are customised to the needs of the organisation. Both have wide ranging benefits with the optimal solution depending on the delegates, the organisation and the situation.

An approach which bridges the gap between these two and that is proving popular is the Leadership Development Awards recognised by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM).

“The ILM Development Awards present a real win-win situation for organisations in both the public and private sector,” says Michael Cooney, Director of Righttrack Consultancy, a provider of a 3 module ILM-recognised leadership programme, Righttrack to Leadership.

“The awards combine recognised, quality assured learning with the flexibility for the programme to be tailored to the situation and delivered in accordance with client needs. This really is a fantastic step forward in leadership development provision as more and more clients not only require tailored in-company solutions, but also the recognition, reliability and support that an awarding body, such as the ILM, provides.”

So what can people expect when they attend such a programme? “First and foremost, a development award such as ours provides up to 72 taught hours covering leadership skills and knowledge applicable to team leaders, first line managers and supervisors and a further 9 hours of self-study and personal analysis,” says Michael. “This provides a solid foundation for the development of leadership excellence and because the programme is tailored to an organisation, there is a high emphasis and focus on the transfer of the learning to the delegates’ day-to-day roles. This is a critical benefit of this approach to leadership development.”

June Hawkins , Head of Qualifications Development and Learning Support, from the ILM, Europe’s largest awarding body for leadership and management, says “Development Awards provide the perfect way for training providers to offer highly flexible programmes that meet the needs of their clients whilst the quality is assured through recognition by ILM”.
