righttrack ... a little bit of magic

October 2010

Hi

Welcome to the latest edition of the Righttrack-E-newsletter.

In this edition, Righttrack's Sarah Goodfellow discusses the differences between being a manager and being a leader. Try Sarah's self-assessment questionnaire to see where you sit. Derek West explores the challenges of developing effective corporate values.

We preview a new area for Righttrack - environmental awareness training and introduce our new "Academy for Trainers". We also announce additions to our well-established presence in Kuwait.

We have a review of a classic management book "The Innovator's Dilemma" and a look at the link between experiential learning and the Chilean miners rescue.

We hope you enjoy ...

Manager or Leader - Which should you strive to be?

Sarah GoodfellowRighttrack's Sarah Goodfellow examines the balance between manager and leader.

"In the current economic climate, the organisational setting is one that's incredibly tough on many fronts. As a manager or a leader in an organisation you are expected to achieve greatness with fewer and fewer resources. This is happening in a backdrop of confusion about should I be a Manager or a Leader?" ...read full article

New at Righttrack

Righttrack is expanding its range of training and consultancy services with a plan to launch two new divisions by the end of 2010. Righttrack Environmental Training will offer help to organisations looking to inspire their employees to change their approach to the environment. See Environmental Awareness Training - Advance Information for more information. Righttrack's Academy for Trainers will offer our "know- how" and experience to organisations wanting to take in-house training delivery to a higher level. See Academy for Trainers - Advance Information for more information.

Righttrack Consultancy has operated in Kuwait for over a decade. To ensure that growth in this region is maintained, Righttrack has recently partnered with the Kuwait based Edara Group. This partnership has already delivered success with a number of clients added in the last few months including: Gulf Bank, National Bank of Kuwait, Commercial Bank and Halliburton Overseas Limited.

On the home front, Righttrack has recently won the tender to supply Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority with Equality & Diversity Training. To win the tender, Righttrack had to meet stringent standards and be highly price competitive. Righttrack also demonstrated a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by emergency services, based on its extensive experience in the sector.

Liverpool direct was another recent tender win. Liverpool direct is a public/private partnership between Liverpool City Council and BT. It is the largest public/private partnership of its kind in the UK. A key factor in the decision was Righttrack's ability to offer a "one-stop" shop for equality and diversity training. Righttrack is delivering thirteen different programmes covering topics such as Disability Equality, Domestic Violence and Faith Religion and Belief.

In Focus: Kept in the dark - Leadership development in extreme conditions

Experiential learningExperiential learning scenarios often place participants in imaginary extreme situations. Jon Davies comments on the link with the Chilean miners rescue.

"Wednesday 13th October 2010 will be set in the memory as the day that the last of the Chilean miners were winched to the surface, watched by the world's media. The events at the San José mine near Copiapó were beamed live across the globe, as the 33 trapped miners escaped their dark underground prison." ...read full article

Books that have influenced me: The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen

The Innovator's Dilemma The Innovator's Dilemma, first published in 1997, is of particular interest to those with an involvement in new product development and business strategy. The central idea is that outstanding companies that do lots of things right - are in tune with the competition, listen to customers and focus on developing new technology - can still lose their market leading position when faced with a disruptive change in technology or market structure." ...read full article
