Equality and Diversity Awareness for Managers and Staff

Claudia Cooney - Righttrack

Standard one or amended half day Equality and Diversity training programmes are designed to provide those attending with a basic knowledge and awareness to appreciate equality and diversity issues in the workplace and recognise the part they have to play in respecting and driving it; it is after all an issue for everyone no matter what their role.

It is important to touch on the equality law so everyone is aware of accountability but what is most important is that everyone understands the ‘how to’ of utilising equality and diversity awareness in the context of their role in the organisation.

Having all staff attend an Equality and Diversity programme will:

  • Give people a greater confidence in knowing how to interact and behave
  • Reduce conflict and confrontation through greater sensitivity and awareness thereby improving employee relations
  • Minimise the possibility of discrimination and reduce the risk of legal challenges
  • Ensure better customer service based on real needs and not assumptions

It is as important to train managers and policy makers to confidently manage Equality and Diversity issues as part of their managerial roles. Guidance, good practice and practical real-life case studies help those with staff responsibilities to demonstrate and influence positive work-based behaviours, understand legal obligations and how to challenge and manage inappropriate behaviours in a sensitive, positive and constructive manner.

With such a diverse mix of people in the UK awareness and confidence in embracing equality and diversity is as important as ever.  Did you know that if the world be made up of only 100 inhabitants then:

  • 6 people would hold American nationality
  • 70 would be illiterate
  • 50 would be dependent on someone else
  • 11 would be gay or lesbian
  • 1 would be a graduate
