Local Authority Client
Client wished their staff to have a greater awareness of environmental and resource efficiency issues. This was expected to help meet resource use reduction targets, make cost savings, and avoid environmental incidents.
Vicky explored Staff attitudes to the environment, and any barriers to change. Interactive exercises brought in the experience and knowledge of all delegates. Delegates identified practical ideas for making changes at their place of work.
The client was delighted with the training and its impact on addressing environmental and resource issues. They widened the scope of the training and sent further delegates.
Envirowise
Envirowise is a government funded organisation charged with providing environmental advice to UK businesses. To do this it established a panel of specialist advisors.
Following a rigorous selection process, Margaret was appointed to the advisor panel and provided telephone and on-site advice to business for several years. Visits to business involved review of existing resource use and environmental management practices and advising on improvements. Advice was formally summarised in a report containing a practical and cost-effective action plan.
Since 1994, Envirowise has helped UK industry save more than £1 billion by reducing waste through more efficient practices.
Automotive Client
The client held ISO 14001 and required an assessment of their compliance with environmental legislation, a register of legislation and an updating service through the year.
Vicky provided a detailed, referenced, report that identified areas of good practice and areas to improve. A register of relevant environmental legislation was also provided.
The client passed their ISO 14001 certification audit and continued to use the service.
Construction Client
A construction company has responded to increasing customer pressure to demonstrate good practice in environmental management. This has entailed setting up milestones towards certification to ISO14001. The company initially required specialist advice to identify environmental aspects and guidance on how to comply with environmental legislation.
Margaret conducted an environmental review to identify the company’s environmental aspects and produced a legal register so that environmental legislation relevant to the aspects was summarised. The register set out the key requirements of the environmental laws and also provided guidance on what the company should do to comply.
The company has been able to satisfy existing and new customers that it is taking a structured approach to environmental management and fulfilling legal obligations.
Metal Press Work Client
The client wished to develop an ISO 14001 environmental management system which dovetailed with their existing systems.
Vicky led various staff to raise awareness, identify environmental aspects and legal requirements. Where possible, environmental matters were grafted onto existing systems.
The client was left with a complete documented environmental management system, and was ready to pursue improvement projects.
Manufacturing Client
A manufacturing company supplying the construction and civil engineering sectors was setting up an environmental management system to gain certification to ISO14001.
Margaret supported the company’s internal environmental management team by conducting and reporting on an environmental review, providing environmental awareness training for all staff and emergency response training for the spill response teams.
The company has gained and maintained ISO14001 certification in line with its own commitments to Corporate Social Responsibility and the expectations of its customers. Utilising a mixture of its own expertise and Margaret’s specialist support helped the company complete the ISO14001 implementation project efficiently and cost-effectively.
Hospital Facilities Management Client
This client required an assessment of their current systems against the requirements of the ISO14001 standard.
Vicky combined desktop work with interviews of personnel and site tours to complete a thorough audit. She provided a detailed report identifying areas of good practice and areas to improve. These were referenced to the clauses of the ISO14001 standard.
The client was highly positive about the external input to their management systems. They continued to pass their ISO14001 certification audit.
Large Manufacturing Client
A large manufacturing company has recently implemented ISO14001 and set up a comprehensive schedule of internal audits to verify compliance with the system, legislation and the pollution prevention guidelines of the Environment Agency. The company required assistance with the more specialised audits and training for its own employees who act as internal auditors.
Margaret has carried out legal and systems compliance audits over the last three years and has been shadowed by the company’s own auditors.
The company has maintained certification to ISO14001 without any major non-compliance and has been able to cost effectively plan the audit schedule making best use of its own employee auditors and Margaret’s specialist services.
District Local Authority
The client wished to make cost savings, and improve sustainability so it could communicate this in quality audits, and to the public.
Operations were considered, and opportunities for improvement identified. The opinions of local community groups were taken into account.
Staff more aware of environmental sustainability issues in their work. Reductions in A4 paper usage, and procurement of 100% recycled paper. Fairtrade refreshments were purchased across the authority.
Brick Manufacturer
The client’s brickworks is situated on a steep slope, above a nature reserve with wildlife lakes. They were keen to ensure any accidental spillage of diesel on their site did not cause a pollution incident.
Vicky gave a broad introduction to water pollution and relevant legislation. She then facilitated a desktop simulation of a spill, using the company’s own procedures and drainage map. Outdoors, a spill was simulated with a bucket of water, and delegates practiced containing the spill with absorbents and drain covers.
The company was now assured its staff was ready to deal with a spill.
Metropolitan Local Authority
The client was the sustainability team of a local authority. They wished to gather evidence of current practice in the authority, to build their mandate to make changes.
A review of the council building was conducted. Temperatures, heating and cooling settings, and equipment left switched on were checked at various times of day. Information on electricity, gas, water and paper consumption and on waste disposal was collected. Bins were checked to ascertain how effective waste segregation was. A report recommended practical changes to reduce utility use and waste volumes.
The client received the information very favourably. The local authority accessed environmental awareness and environmental management training. Energy and water waste were reduced.
WRAP
WRAP is a government funded organisation that has taken over many of the functions of Envirowise to help businesses to improve environmental management and reduce waste and resource costs. In 2010 WRAP undertook to deliver audit training to improve efficient use of water. A consultant was required to develop and deliver the training and to conduct the audits. The project involved liaison with a host company and preparation of training to which delegates from other companies would also be invited.
Margaret prepared a presentation on the efficient use of water and how to conduct a site audit. This presentation was delivered at a host company and was followed up by a site inspection to identify and evaluate key aspects of water use. The information from the audit was used to prepare an action plan that focused on practical measures to reduce water costs.
Although the water use at the host company was not great, initial annual savings opportunities totalling over £2500 were identified. Feedback from the host company and other invited delegates was very positive.>
In-company / bespoke training benefits
Righttrack Consultancy offers in-company training programmes that deliver results.
The training can be bespoke to the exact requirements of the client or selected from Righttrack's extensive portfolio of existing programmes. People are often pleasantly surprised that both these options can offer cost effective alternatives to sending a number of staff on a standard open (public) course.
